Demonstration Calls For Declassifying Complete Torture Report

~~Senator Burr Don’t Obscure Torture History--February 25, 2015    Thirteen people from North Carolina Stop Torture Now (NCSTN)met to carry signs and pass out flyers in Raleigh, North Carolina at the corners of Person and Bern Streets next to the Terry Sanford Federal Building.  Their signs continued to ask for the closing of the interrogation/detention unit at the military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.  Some signs also asked Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) to stop trying to white wash and reclassify the SSCI Torture Report which was released, finally, last December, 2014.    Senator Burr is now the chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.  He took the reins of that committee from Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA) in January of this year when his party achieved control of the US Senate.  He initially promised openness and vigilance from that committee.  But his words and actions appear to point toward secrecy, and chumminess with the very parties his committee should be providing over sight to.   This demonstration was conducted in concert with a smaller one outside of Senator Burr’s offices in Winston Salem, NC.  In addition, people were encouraged to call and write their elected Congressional representatives on the same day.  The National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT) also supported this action and encouraged its membership to participate.   The demonstrators were encouraged by the many friendly honkings of auto horns. That was something not so forthcoming in previous actions. (Photo: Lynn and Stephen Newsom participating in the demonstration against torture)
